Wondering How It All Works?

This page covers some of the most common questions about working with us—so you can feel confident and supported as you explore your next steps.

Q’s About Getting Started

  • At Numena Nutrition, all of your care is provided by Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs).

A Registered Dietitian is a highly trained nutrition expert who has completed:

    • An accredited degree in nutrition science

    • Supervised clinical internships

    • A national board certification exam

    • Ongoing continuing education to stay up-to-date with the latest science and best practices

This advanced training allows us to support complex health needs—like diabetes management, disordered eating recovery, medical nutrition therapy, and more—with expertise, and evidence-based care.

Other nutrition professionals, like certified nutritionists or health coaches, can offer valuable support too—but their training and regulation can vary widely. It’s important to ask about a provider’s background so you can find the right fit for your needs.

  • It’s the beginning of us getting to know each other. A discovery call typically takes about 15–20 minutes. We’ll send you a link to our virtual space, or we can connect by phone.

    We’ll cover:

    • Practice policies

    • Virtual space logistics

    • Pricing, payment, and scheduling

    • Our approach to care

    • A brief idea of what a treatment plan or relationship could look like

You’ll also have the chance to share what brings you here and ask any questions you have.

  • Yes! We'll send you paperwork through our secure electronic medical record system, where you can sign everything electronically.

    This might include:

    • Consent forms

    • Nutrition intake forms (optional)

    • Release of information forms

You’ll also have the option to input your insurance and credit card information (your card will never be charged without your consent).

  • We’ll take time to understand your experiences and what you’re hoping for—moving as slowly or as quickly as you need. Together, we’ll start exploring sustainable, guilt-free ways to nourish yourself with more ease and trust.

    You can expect:

    • Thoughtful, compassionate questions from us

    • Space to ask what feels important to you

    • A personalized approach based on your needs

  • Healing your relationship with food and body takes time, and everyone’s needs are different. We’ll find a rhythm that feels right for you and check in regularly to make sure the support stays sustainable and meaningful.

Q’s About Insurance & Costs

  • Navigating insurance can be confusing, but we’re here to help!

If your insurance is based in Washington State or Oregon, most plans cover outpatient nutrition counseling to some degree. If your insurance is out-of-state, coverage can vary.

We’ll work with you to figure out your benefits—and we even have a helpful Insurance Script to guide your conversations with your provider.

  • Absolutely!  We are in-network with:

    • Blue Cross Blue Shield (non-Medicare)

    • Cigna

    • First Choice Health (some PacificSource)

    • Kaiser PPO

    • LifeWise

    • Moda

    • Premera

    • Regence

If you have one of these plans, we’ll:

    1. Call to verify your benefits

    2. Submit claims on your behalf

    3. Handle the paperwork

You would just be responsible for any copay or deductible amount at the time of your visit.

  • Of course! We'll guide you through understanding your "out-of-network" benefits. Typically, you’ll pay at the time of service, and we’ll provide you with a "superbill" to submit for potential reimbursement.

  • Sometimes yes, sometimes no—it depends entirely on your plan.

We’ll help you check your benefits before your first visit so you know what to expect. If your insurance doesn’t cover something, you’ll be responsible for that amount, but we’ll do our best to make sure there are no surprises.

  • We love that you're investing in your care! You can purchase appointment packages in 3 or 6-session bundles. ($450-$800) Payment can be made securely via Stripe through our electronic health record system. We also accept Venmo.
